Australian Picture Archives (Barbebleu)

There are several Australian websites that contain photo archives that are linked through a common search engine. These include some great nostalgic photos of a variety of performers. Here is a collection of cancan and similar images. You may want to try your luck as well. Look for the search window on the various sites.

Russian Videos (Barbebleu)

Russian videos

The yandex search engine also turned up a number of videos on the sites I visited. I don't think video.google picks these up, so I hope most are new. However, I am sure that some must have appeared here before.

Also a lot of these are from dance groups who are anxious to show the range of their repertoire. So, on many, the cancan is only a part of the video.

Remember PhotoMail from yesterday? Well there's also VideoMail:

I have had some trouble with it freezing up - maybe I exeeded a limit - and in fact am having trouble right now getting the links to open so that I can copy and paste the URLs into this message, so there may have to be a supplement.

At any rate, here is one from VideoMail::

Yandex.ru (Barbebleu)

Thanks go to Scott for pointing out the Russian search engines. I tried the first one (yandex.ru) and had a good bit of success searching using the Cyrillic for cancan, which looks something like, "kah-kah".

Here are the fruits of that endeavor. Cancanneith should be pleased with the results - split skirts predominate. I have to say that personally I am in Max's camp on the split skirt issue, but the truth is I like them all.

Some of these are slow loading. Also, there are some duplicates even among the links below because some of the dance groups' pictures show up on more than one site.

Mephisto

I accidentally discovered anoither film with a cancan in it. It is Mephisto, a 1981 film that got good critical acclaim and won an Oscar for best foreign language film and various other awards. It has a cancan about midway through that is of reasonable duration and has fair costumes. I recorded it off TCM a few weeks ago and watched it last night.

Here is the imdb link for more information:

Two Faces of Dr Jekyll

DVD ALERT:

Hammer Film's Two faces of Dr Jekyll is now available on DVD in wide screen format. Film quality seems to be slightly dark and grainy, but the current release is probably as close to the original cinematic version as we're likely to get at the moment. If interested, you can order a copy from Ghost House Productions; they specialize in rare and difficult-to-find classics from the golden age. Direct link to the DVD:

Enjoy.
