Successor Cancan Group

Our main discussion group, Cancan Favorites, as well as all other Yahoo groups, are being shut down by Yahoo.

We are developing a new site, “Cancan Group” at groups.io, which has roughly the same features as Cancan Favorites.

The group site is:

CAN CAN | KIU - Video

SOS

I was appalled to find a message on the Yahoo Groups Cancan Favorites page this morning that they will effectively shut down all the Yahoo Groups so far as any new posts are concerned at October 21 (or 28?) - conflicting posts from Yahoo as to the date.  I have transcribed the message from Yahoo below, but you can see it and the related links at the banner at the top of the group pages when you check it.

All the existing content will be deleted on December 14 - photos, messages, etc.

Thanks a lot Yahoo for the generous lead time on this.  I have an added problem in that I will be largely unavailable from Oct.19 through Oct. 21.

Whereas prior sites we have had content at (Multiply, old Google groups) had a migration path to another site when they shut down, Yahoo has made no such provision.  So, anything we want to save may have to be manually downloaded.   More on that below.

There is a possibility of automatically migrating to something called groups.io.  I haven't researched that yet to see how viable it might be.

So, we have some decisions to make and tasks to do - and quickly.  If the October 21 date is correct, we will no longer be able to communicate on the Cancan Favorites message board after then.  Until we can come up with an alternative, I will post messages at the Club CCD Blogspot site, you are familiar with.  Others who are members there can post also. The link is:

https://clubccd.blogspot.com/

Please add this link to your favorites and look there for messages after October 21.

If a migration to groups.io isn't feasible, then we have to decide how to preserve any content we wish to keep.  I have previously archived the Cancan Favorite  photos (as of March 2019) at Photos.Google.com.  The link to the relevant page (which you may want to favorite)  is:

https://clubccd.blogspot.com/p/photo-albums.html

We will need to save the photos at the other old Yahoo Groups to Photos .Google.com before December 14.  I don't know a practical way to archive the messages and other content manually.

New meeting place:

So, if groups.io doesn't work out, we will need to find another group host.  I think Google has a group feature and also Facebook, although I have not considered either of those for a long time and don't remember the pluses and minuses of them.  The article linked below summarizes some of them.

So, I would ask each of you to consider what alternatives would work best and post your suggestions at Cancan Favorites soon.

Some links:

https://mail-list.com/4-alternatives-to-yahoo-groups/

https://groups.io/

I'll think about this some more too, but please weigh in with your ideas.

The announcement from Yahoo:

Attention: Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019 [October 21?].

Understand what's changing in Yahoo Groups

Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 21, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded.

What features will go away?

    Files
    Polls
    Links
    Photos
    Folders
    Calendar
    Database
    Attachments
    Conversations
    Email Updates
    Message Digest
    Message History

What will happen to the site?

The Yahoo Groups site will continue to exist, however, all public groups will be made private or restricted. Any new group members will need to request an invite or be invited by an admin. Admins will still be able to manage various group settings, though some functionality will be limited.
What will happen on October 21st?

On October 21st, you will no longer be able to upload any content to the site. To share info with members of your groups, you'll continue to be able to do so via email.
How can I keep my Yahoo Groups content?

Photos and files can be saved right from the Yahoo Groups site, or you can download your data from the Privacy Dashboard.
Will I be able to use Yahoo Groups going forward?

You'll still be able to communicate with your groups via email and search for private groups on the site. In addition, admins will continue to have limited access to group settings and administration tools.
