CASABLANCA, "The BALLET" - The Performance

I'm posting a couplet of videos with John Clifford's ballet, "Casablanca".  I wish the videos were better, but you take what you can get of this nice performance.  Too bad the film didn't include this scene.

Doubling Down - Madame Gigi's Outrageous French Cancan Dancers

Well, I still like them.

Here's a performance from 2014 in which they have on their older and, in my opinion better, costumes on. Now, if they would combine these with some stockings, the visuals would be much better.

The performance may not be Broadway quality, but how many are?  Overall I think it's pretty darn good and very entertaining. The ladies are having fun performing, and I enjoy watching them.  I think that's what it is about.  We aren't blessed with all that many cancan troupes in this country, and Madame Gigi's has been and still is a much appreciated asset to our community.

That said, I think we should feel free to comment and offer constructive criticism on the quality of dancing, originality of the performance, costuming, production values, etc., but I also think we should refrain from commenting on the physical attributes of the dancers.  Not everyone can be a fashion model.

I applaud all the ladies who take the time and effort to put on performances for us.  I don't think we should discourage any of them.

Madame Gigi's - Pile Up

Video from the 2016 performance at Milwaukee's Bastille Day by Madame Gigi's Outrageous French Cancan Dancers.  They seem to have settled on the gigantic black bloomers as their standard garb. Cute perhaps, but needs a rethink.

Pantaloons II

The Baroness and the cancan.  Annie Cordy performs the cancan from "La Vie Parisienne" on French television.  Among her other accomplishments, she appeared in the 1958 film "Tabarin", which has an excellent cancan.  I do not know if she was among the dancers.

Pantaloons I

A couple of posts featuring dancers in pantaloons, making the argument that more is just as good as less.  This one is from a performance of The Merry Widow at the Baltic Seasons Festival in Kaliningrad.  It features Olga Lozovaja as Valencienne.  It was previously posted.

TipTap Swing - Gaîté Parisienne: Can-Can (La Chance aux Chansons)

French television, and, in particular, the long running show, "La Chance aux Chansons", has had many excellent cancan performances over the years.  The troupe is not identified, unless it is Tip Tap Swing.

Le Cancan Bijou - Changing of the Guard

From LCCB's official website:

Le Cancan Bijou is excited to announce its new directors!

After over 15 years of serving the troupe, Monique [Woodruff] chose to retire from her duties as director this past April and named Cindy and Meredith as the new Co-Directors.  Cindy has been a member of Le Cancan Bijou since 2008 and brings her strong, level-headed leadership skills to this dynamic duo.  Meredith joined the troupe in the Fall of 2013, and has been a committed and passionate member ever since.  Together, they are honored to have been entrusted with the troupe’s success and have big plans for its future.

Cindy and Meredith jumped in feet first to ready the troupe for the 2016 season of the Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party opening on November 19 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.   You can find Le Cancan Bijou kicking up their heels as part of the new music hall show on Mad Sal's stage as well as scandalizing the ladies of the Royal Opera Gala on the Victoria & Albert Stage.  Make sure you visit the event's website at www.dickensfair.com for more information and to purchase tickets.

This is great news for both ladies.  Cindy was one of three Bijou dancers (along with Elizabeth "Lizzie Lovelace" Etler and the amazing Vaudie Bristow) who made my first trip to San Francisco in 2011 so memorable, and is responsible for curating the "official" costuming guide for LCCB.   She and Meredith - whom I will always refer to as "the new girl," even three years after her debut - are year-round participants in NoCal's historical-reenactment scene, whether rocking the vintage garb at Hearst Castle soirees or Charleston'ing up a storm as part of the Gatsby-esque Decobelles.

(For that matter, Monique may well be in attendance at Dickens: her turn as a psychotic diva in the Shakespeare farce "All's Well That Ends Badly" was one of last year's comic high points...)

Kick out the lights!

The now-classic "sepia shot!" From left: Cindy, Vanessa, Meredith, Barbara, and Lizzie

In other LCCB news, Keegan "Lace H. Windows" Tyler recently got married...and fellow cancaneuse Lindsay "Geektron" Ferguson officiated at the nuptials!

(And yes, my trip's booked...)
