Club CCD: October 2006

I decided to abuse...er, exercise...my co-managerial privileges, and created a new forum for upcoming movies and DVD's that the club should know about.

When you see the initial thread, you'll know why.

Le Flatline

The Benito's Sketch Is Now on DVD!

That's right, the "second Holy Grail" of us cancan fans (after Renoir's FRENCH CANCAN) has finally made it to DVD, as part of the three-disk set Benny Hill Complete and Unadulterated - The Hill's Angels Years, Set Five (1982-1985) (A&E Home Video). If you've worn out your copy of "Golden Chortles" on VHS, if you despair of the low-fidelity video on YouTube, The Lad Himself has finally answered your prayers.

Need more reason than that to buy the set? Okay. How about the "Club Bizarre" and cruise ship sketches, with the lovely and talented Louise English being sexy in three different languages? How about a nice featurette with Sue Upton and other Angels fondly recalling their time on the show? How about visual and verbal gags that are STILL funny to this day?

Buy it on Amazon.com, buy it on DeepDiscountDVD.com -- heck, buy it on eBay if you can get a good deal on it -- but buy it!

Long Pretty Girls - "Can Can"

...are a female Korean pop quartet whose first big single was called "Can Can." And yes, that's exactly what it's about!

Here's the YouTube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GqZf1M43GU

Here's their (Flash-intensive) website.
http://www.lpg.co.kr
From there, you can launch a Windows Media version of the video. You can also view/right-click-to-save on this link:

http://www.lpg.co.kr/v1/mv/mv1.wmv

(26 Mb! Click accordingly...)

Maybe if we send this clip to Kim Il Sung, he'll forget all about messing with those A-bomb tests.

Control over posting photos?

This message has been deleted by the manager or assistant manager.

Photo pages

I added a few categories to the photo pages and put some content in some of them. It seemed to me that we haven't really had a place for pictures from the older time periods - pre 1930's.

I added a Victorian and Edwardian category, one for the Twenties, one for the Thirties and Forties, and one for the Fifites and Sixties. To me these represent differences in styles that logically group together. We could change them up if anyone wants.

French Cancan

Renoir's incomparable classic.

FAQ

It occurs to me we might be able to use a FAQ page. It could cover tips on how to search, rules for use of the site, history of the group, and perhaps other things. If it seems like a good idea to anyone else, I'll take a crack at a first draft and others can edit it.

Tiny URL

Dear All

A professional colleague of mine has just told me about a site called www.tinyurl.com : with this site, you can reduce large URL addresses to tinyurl.com/XXXXXX, the crosses marking the maximum six lettered code: this can then be pasted in to any other document.

I know that this will hide the, often interesting, route address for many of our photographs but, in the case of Photobucket, it might prove helpful for users of the original site.

Anyway, I thought that I wold pass it on.

"Le Galerie Flatline" is Open

Since y'all were kind enough to set aside some display space for the "old man," I browsed through more than 7,000 (!) pictures I've accumulated over the last decade, and selected a bunch that, for various reasons, are near and dear to my heart. Enjoy.

Le Flatline

Other possible features

Some other possible features:

"Literature" - anecdotes, personal experiences, stories?

Cancan in Film and Television - Lists have been made elsewhere, but maybe we should replicate one here with new discoveries added.

What do you think?

Links 10-16-06 (from Photobucket)

Links 10-16-06:

Going to the well with Photobucket. Nothing here to connect these except their location. Lots of amateur photography. Some good, some bad. Same for the dancing.

Reeling!

Hi All

I go away for three days and when I come back this site has grown like Alice after the pills! Well done, one and all, for making this so vibrant and effective to soon. When I get back from my next trip, I will add a few more images to my gallery.

Bonne chance!

Message Search Via Email ...

OK, I've tested out the system I outlined yesterday and everything seems to be working fine. Here's a more detailed explanation; hopefully it's not too complcated to follow.

First, you'll need a searchable email account, such as those provided by Yahoo or Gmail (for some inexplicable reason, Hotmail doesn't seem to offer a search function, which is extremely odd, to say the least).

Let's assume for argument's sake that you have a Gmail account.

The first step is to create an MSN Passport.

Passport allows you to access MSN groups without the need for a Hotmail account. To get a Passport account, go to www.passport.net/ and sign up using the Gmail address.

After you've created a Passport, come back here to CCD and re-join. Make sure to set your membership to send all messages directly to your Gmail inbox (this is one of the options you're offered when you join the group). From that point on, everytime someone posts a message to the group, a copy will automatically be forwarded to your Gmail account.

If you want to run a search through the group's messages, you can do it from your Gmail account. I realise it's not as simple as the search function at Yahoo Groups, but it's more convenient than creating an entirely new group to archive messages from this one. Anyway, let me know what you think.

Cheers, Perry.

And don't neglect going to "All Sizes"

Posting images

I have posted my images using the no size reduction feature. Since there is no overall size limit on the group and it is on a per member basis, it doesn't hog the group's capacity to do so, and it makes higher quality images available. The downside is that you have to come back under a new email ID sooner.

Does anyone know whether, if your email ID goes stale and starts bouncing messages, MSN comes back and deletes prior postings made under that email identitity? If not, then there would not be a need to keep each email account active.
