Cancan - Le Frou Frou I

Le Frou Frou was a French weekly magazine published during the Edwardian era and in to the Twenties that featured risque, satirical and humorous drawings and cartoons and other material. This is the first in an intermittent series of posts featuring selected images from the magazine.

As can be seen the images vary considerably in style and quality.  They appear to be scans or photocopies of the originals for the web posting by BnF so they are not as sharp as would be desirable.

International Women's Day

... was March 8.   Here, the Afghan delegates perform.  A funny/sexy cartoon, which answers the perennial question.  Only humor - No disrespect to anyone intended.

Additional photos from the Théâtre de Paris' 1985 production of La Vie Parisienne taken by Daniel Cande.  Cande seems to have photographed just about every theater, opera and ballet event in Paris during the 1980s.

These are from a collection housed in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Gaite Parisienne - ABT - 1988 as Photographed by Daniel Cande

French photographer Daniel Cande also photographed this 1988 performance of American Ballet Theater's Gaite Parisienne in Paris with the dancers dressed in the Christian Lacroix costumes.  There is an extensive collection of additional photos from the performance available from the Bibliothèque nationale de France site.

Anyone  considering going to the upcoming revivial of this work by the ABT (see  https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/cancanfavorites/conversations/messages/2250 ) might want to see the collection.  Pictures of the short-skirted dancers predominate.  I do not know if that is true of the actual show, but I suspect it may be.  There were also a picture or two of the maids.

La Vie Parisienne as Photographed by Daniel Cande

Daniel Cande photographed three versions of "La Vie Parisienne" over the years - in 1981, 1985 and 1990.  The photos are housed in the Bibliothèque nationale de France collection.  The top four photos are from the 1990 production, and the bottom photo is from the 1985 production.  I have cropped them to emphasize the dancers.

The collections from which these came and the originals of these and other photos can be accessed at:

Costume Design Drawings for La Vie Parisienne 1980

The top drawing could easily become one of my favorite drawings of the cancan.   These are costume drawings for a 1980 production of "La Vie Parisienne" staged by Théâtre du Châtelet.

They are from the collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.  I am not sure of the artist's name, but it may be Valeri.   These are included in a collection of photos of the production taken by Daniel Cande.

The originals, together with a number of other photos of the same drawings with differing amounts of brightness and contrast, may be viewed at:

Tynkas

This vivacious troupe of very pretty Czech dancers is not identified but is nicely photographed by Tynkas.  They seem to be enjoying the photo shoot as much as I'm sure the photographer did.  And catch the mischievous look of the dancer in the third photo from the bottom.

You can see quite a few more of this great set of photos at Tynkas rajce-idens.cz site:

http://tynkas.rajce.idnes.cz/Kankan/

(By the way, tip to dancers: lose the padding.)
