The Bell Telephone Hour - Gaite Parisienne - A re-discovery!

I've been looking for this for years.  It's ahead of the missing Carol Burnett episode on my want list.

I saw this on black and white TV when it was broadcast in 1959.  I don't think it's seen the light of day since.  That's a long wait.  However, obviously, someone got hold of a copy to be able to record it.  I wonder how.

The segment is from Gaite Parisienne and features dancers from the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.   The costumes are not from the original production - tights instead of stockings and garter belts - but this was the late 50s and more in keeping with costuming then.  Perhaps it being broadcast on prime time TV had something to do with that also.

By the standards of some of what we see now on You Tube it may not seem that exciting, but in the context of the place and time it made quite an impression.

The video says it is 480p, but plays more like 360p.  Nevertheless it is better than you might expect given its age.

You can watch the whole thing, including preliminaries, but the actual cancan begins at about 6:13.

Trivia: If I remember correctly, the Kingston Trio also performed on the same show.

I hope you enjoy it seeing as much as I enjoyed seeing it again.

Gaite Parisienne

(cancan starts in earnest at about 2:25)

A nice showing for black panties and stockings fans. The video could be better but is good enough.

Gaite Parisienne - ABT - 1988 as Photographed by Daniel Cande

French photographer Daniel Cande also photographed this 1988 performance of American Ballet Theater's Gaite Parisienne in Paris with the dancers dressed in the Christian Lacroix costumes.  There is an extensive collection of additional photos from the performance available from the Bibliothèque nationale de France site.

Anyone  considering going to the upcoming revivial of this work by the ABT (see  https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/cancanfavorites/conversations/messages/2250 ) might want to see the collection.  Pictures of the short-skirted dancers predominate.  I do not know if that is true of the actual show, but I suspect it may be.  There were also a picture or two of the maids.

Corpus Christi Cancan

Not a sacrilege, but a City.  For anyone in South Texas or on the Texas Gulf Coast, here is what could be a nice performance, and with a party to boot.   No pictures yet, if at all.  See more about it at:
