Le French Cancan - ALCAZAR

Judging from the title on You Tube this appears to be a performance at the Alcazar in Paris. No additional information is given, but I would guess that this is from the early 1970's. The quality of the video may not be that great, but the dancing and costumes are first rate.

Vfl Ballett Engelskirchen

Vfl Ballett Engelskirchen is a German dance group that specializes in
the cancan. There are numerous photographs of them available on the web,
but most of them are not high quality as they appear there.

Oh Mes Ananas II

Oh Mes Ananas

There have been some very nice videos, but very few still photos, of Oh Mes Ananas, the New Zealand cancan troupe. Laurent Law has now remedied that with two great sets of photos at Flickr:

The Divas

The Divas (Дивас) entertain. Thankfully they have eschewed the usual Russian split skirts and opted for an eyecatching combination of white petticoats, high-cut black panties and stockings,

Unfortunately, I'm not able to give proper credit to the dancers or
photographers by name. I'll just have to direct you to the
photographers' sites, as the venue and website are Chinese. My guess is
that the dancers are Russian. The event was something called the Urban
Forest Carnival.

Some Rarities

Here are links to several classic era rarities that have become available recently:

La Casta Susana

(Argentina 1944)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIXJOKcvF6w (starts about 28.30, although there is a music hall scene earlier that doen't qualify as a cancan)

This is a bad print, but it does show what promise lies ahead if a good copy could be located. The cancan scene is sort of a smash-up between a Busby Berkeley cast-of-hundreds number and a Marx Brothers comedy. If anyone knows how to get a DVD of this (or even a VHS tape), please post the information.

There is also a French/Spanish 1963 remake of this film that contains two very nice cancan scenes. I haven't seen a posting of it on You Tube yet though.

The 1944 cancan scene is excerpted on Cancan Classics:

http://cancanclassics.multiply.com/video/item/20/La_Casta_Susana_Argentina_1944

Zaza

(US 1938)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24qjvOdCeQQ (toward the end of part 1)

The cancan here is pretty minimal, but it does feature Claudette Colbert flipping her skirts in the film from which the iconic 1938 Look magazine cover was taken. Here's a link to that image in case you are not familiar with it:

http://www.pettipond.com/laterimages/images_m/look112238.jpg

I have never seen this shown on either broadcast TV or cable. The print is not that sharp, but it's the only game in town right now. Perhaps someday, this will be available on DVD.

Fernsehunterhaltung Silvester

(Germany 1966)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lYrIE2Iobc

I include this in this posting because non-German members will probably never see it otherwise, and it is a nice sharp print for a televison program from the mid-Sixties that features classic costuming (tights excepted).

An excerpted version can also be seen at Cancan Classics:

http://cancanclassics.multiply.com/video/item/21/Fernsehunterhaltung_Silvester_1966

Le Cancan Bijou at Dickens Fair 2011

Le Cancan Bijou in perfrmance at the 2011 Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco. This wonderful video was filmed by Robert Payes, aka Dixie Flatline, the Godfather of the online cancan community, during his recent pilgrimage to see their performance.

LCCB, as usual, gives a rousing performance that shows off the fun the dancers have in performing. To me that makes the performance. May they long perform, and may I someday be able to make the same trip to see them in action.

Multiply's size limits on uploads will not allow the posting of the full 1080p HD version of this video, so I had to post a low-res version. I highly recommend you view the original in HD on You Tube at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGNkO6S36zA

Dixie was also able to capture a great collection of still photos at the Fair (not limited to LCCB), which he generously posted at Flickr and which can be seen at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/stiffshots/sets/72157628403935131/

and

http://www.flickr.com/photos/stiffshots/sets/72157628416059391/

So, many thanks to Dixie and to LCCB for a very nice Christmas present to all of us

Cheers, Barbebleu

Orpheus in the Underworld

From a UK version in the 1980's I believe. If you liked Benny Hill's Benito's sketch, you'll like this too.

The You Tube link is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFUqAAEWVE0

In case anyone in the UK or other Region 2 countries wants a DVD of this, it is:

George Walker presents “Orpheus in the Underworld”, a Brent Walker/BBC Co-production

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Orpheus-in-the-Underworld-DVD/dp/B0006IGN2A/ref=cm_rdp_product

I didn't see a US version at Amazon, but I didn't look extensively for one elsewhere.

If you have a worldwide DVD player, this should work for you.

Barbebleu

Dollárpapa

Here is a new one from the Soviet Bloc. This one is entitled,
"Dollárpapa", and is from Hungary circa 1956, which was not a happy
time in that country. The real cancan is toward the end of the clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACB4HZ-ACDU

Here is the IMDB page, which does not add much useful information:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049151/

Mystère au Moulin Rouge

I came across these video clips from a French TV production called Mystère au Moulin Rouge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjZEoMKH24c

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LKzo9lOGbg

There's not much information about it in English that I could fine on the web, but, tantalizingly, the video itself has English subtitles. Perhaps it will be made available in the US or OK at some point in the future.

Here's the IMDB page, with a review:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1815844/

Does anyone know more about it?

La Nouvelle Eve in Hong Kong (Back and better than ever)

Do you remember some very nice photos and a video of La Nouvelle Eve
performing in Hong Kong at the Elements Mall in 2008? Unfortunately,
the photos that were linked in messages 353 and 390 (at Cancan Favorites) are no longer
extant, but the video is still there - see message 358.

But there were other talented photographers at work. Take a look at one
of the all time great cancan photo shoots courtesy of Lin P.C. who has
posted his work at PBase. All I can say is "WOW!". And "Thanks!"
