Les Guincheuses French Cancan

Les Guincheuses French Cancan, a troupe under the direction of Monika Knap, performs at an outdoor venue in Sèvres.  Ms Knap is a well-known teacher and dancer of the cancan, whose site has been linked before.

French Cancan - Monika Knap

Monika Knap's students in a videoed performance, with a bonus photo from Instagram.  As noted in her quotes in the prior posts below, she believes the cancan as performed at the major shows can be too uniform and structured.  The video is a little dark and only 480p, but it's definitely worthwhile.

Monika Knap: "No, the French cancan is not dead!"

And honestly, who should know better than the former Moulin Rouge cancaneuse-turned-teacher?

And some choice quotes about Our Favorite Dance:

"At the Moulin-Rouge, the cancan represents five minutes of the show only, and it's the same choreography for years, and then, in these big houses, the physical criteria are drastic, the girls are all identical. Competition, it loses the free and rogue side that makes the charm of this art. It's a pity," sighed Monika.

"It's not easy for everyone to raise their legs to the ear," she laughs, "but I always find the strength of each morphology and each girl has her solo in my choreography."

Le cancan de Monika Knap

A new Facebook post from Mme. Knap's "Le Gang des Culottes" (translated, "The Panties Gang") performing for a film documentary. Loving the newer "traditional" costumes and stockings.

The dancers are Marlène Lecoeur, Zoé Matelot, and Antoinette Marchal.
