Sad news today out of France for the dance world in general, and us "fans of the can" in particular, as singer/ballerina/dancer/fashion icon Renée Marcelle "Zizi" Jeanmaire passed away. She was 96.
Most of us know her best for her (unfortunately short-lived) 1981 Broadway stint in a revival of Cole Porter's "Can-Can."
I've been looking for this for years. It's ahead of the missing Carol Burnett episode on my want list.
I saw this on black and white TV when it was broadcast in 1959. I don't think it's seen the light of day since. That's a long wait. However, obviously, someone got hold of a copy to be able to record it. I wonder how.
The segment is from Gaite Parisienne and features dancers from the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. The costumes are not from the original production - tights instead of stockings and garter belts - but this was the late 50s and more in keeping with costuming then. Perhaps it being broadcast on prime time TV had something to do with that also.
By the standards of some of what we see now on You Tube it may not seem that exciting, but in the context of the place and time it made quite an impression.
The video says it is 480p, but plays more like 360p. Nevertheless it is better than you might expect given its age.
You can watch the whole thing, including preliminaries, but the actual cancan begins at about 6:13.
Trivia: If I remember correctly, the Kingston Trio also performed on the same show.
Usually Russian folk dancers wear modesty petticoats that serve their function all too well, but here's a new twist. Modesty petticoats/panties all in one. Freedom of movement trumps modesty to create ab interesting effect.
There are some very nice spinning sequences here. Wait for the kicks for the full effect.
