Bastille Day NYC 2017 Update

It's happening on Sunday, July 9th this year - after some rumors surfaced that FIAF might not even hold it, due to lack of police due to the Cheeto-in-Chief's in-town security detail.

But the show must got on...and GUESS WHO THE DANCE TROUPE IS THIS YEAR?

I guess they didn't want to spring for Sarah O'Dwyer two years in a row.

Speaking of Ms. O'Dwyer, here's my post from last year:

And if you're so inclined, my photos of KPD from 2013:

JM JAZZ STUDIO DE DANÇA

JM JAZZ STUDIO DE DANÇA  of Boa Vista Do Rio Branco, Brazil

The video is a little blurry, especially at first, but the spirited performance is very nice.  Unfortunately, their web page does not have many photos and none of the cancan.

OZ Can-Can - Class Act Creative

A new video, some new photos and an old favorite from Brisbane's Class Act Creative.  They've wisely added some garter belts to their wardrobe.  Nice touch.

Dancehall Darlins

Tucson's Dancehall Darlins entertain.  The video has some nice segments.  I'd love to see the unedited version. Unfortunately, a lot of their photos are on the blurry side.

The penultimate photo puts me in mind of this old photo, which as best I recall was also from Tucson.  A later generation of the same group carrying on?  It's been too long for me to resurrect the provenance of this one to try an establish a connection.

Perry Como's Christmas in Paris (1982)

IT'S BACK ONLINE!

A rare treat from my early days with a Sony Betamax (!) VCR. 480p resolution (but remember: back then, EVERYTHING on American TV was 480p) and a decent, not great, capture, but it's still one for the collectors and traditionalists.

Action starts around 8:30.

Why the Cheap Seats Aren't a Bargain

You can tell from the projected images what a nice show this was.  Now, if the guy who shot those videos would only  post them ...

The dancers are not identified, but deserve to be on the classic cancan A-List.

Monika Knap: "No, the French cancan is not dead!"

And honestly, who should know better than the former Moulin Rouge cancaneuse-turned-teacher?

And some choice quotes about Our Favorite Dance:

"At the Moulin-Rouge, the cancan represents five minutes of the show only, and it's the same choreography for years, and then, in these big houses, the physical criteria are drastic, the girls are all identical. Competition, it loses the free and rogue side that makes the charm of this art. It's a pity," sighed Monika.
"It's not easy for everyone to raise their legs to the ear," she laughs, "but I always find the strength of each morphology and each girl has her solo in my choreography."

Blue n' Bizarre - Punk is not Dead!

Blue n' Bizarre (Lorelai Blue - a Bettie Page look-alike under all that make-up - and Honey B'Zarre) in a punk-cancan-striptease mashup that graphically demonstrates that punk is not dead.  (There is topless nudity at the end of the performance - an advisory for those who might be offended.)

French Cancan - Luna Moka

A flash (or four) of red, courtesy of the Luna Moka Burlesque School of Strasbourg, France.  the cancan dancers are under the direction of Daniela Fournadjeva.

"L'effeuillage burlesque est l'art de se dévêtir avec humour et glamour. Les filles, sortez vos bas-résilles, vos culottes à froufrou et vos corsets affriolants ... L'école de Luna Moka ouvre ses portes!"

The videoed performance is recent.  At present there is only one additional blurry photo.  If I discover that some have been uploaded later I will add them to this post.

Tabarin (1958)

These dancers are from the Moulin Rouge, circa late 1950s and the familiar photos are very nice, but if you want to see them in action in these very costumes in an extended performance get the DVD of "Tabarin" a French film from 1958.  (Don't ask me to explain why the Moulin Rouge dancers are in a film entitled Tabarin.)  The DVD is generally available on French EBay.  If you are in the US, you'll need a worldwide or multi-region DVD player to play it, however.

The images, originally from Life magazine, were found at:

An EBay.fr sale of the DVD (there are others):
