Lighting

Fancy lighting effects rarely do much to enhance a cancan performance.  Here is an exception that suggests a limelight effect.  I no longer have a link to the  source.

Art and Inspiration - Stylized Cancan

A nifty image of four dancers.  I do not know the artist, and I no longer have a link to the source.

But, I do have a link to the inspiration - the well known work by Jean-Gabriel Domergue:

Scarline's at Châtillon sur Seine

The Les Scarline's troupe put on a cabaret show for a senior's day celebration in Châtillon sur Seine, France that included this cancan.

The event was reported in the blog of Christaldesaintmarc, where you can find more photos:

Backyard Follies - Not Exactly the Pillars of the Earth

The dancers from Dance Like an Egyptian featured in the Backyard Follies posting of July 20 return with an endearing bloopers video.  The cathedral doesn't get built here.

Betty Crispy - Effeuillage New Burlesque

Some nice photos from the site of Betty Crispy, a French burlesque performer whose sites are definitely worth visiting.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Betty-Crispy-Effeuillage-New-Burlesque/189834451084703?sk=info&ref=page_internal

Ms Crispy is a dancer who has discovered a new career in burlesque.  I can't tell that she appears in any of the cancan photos, but you can judge for yourself if you visit her sites.  I don't know the name of the group portrayed.

Credit for the photos belongs to Stephane Chollet:

Most of the photos were taken at a performance at the Soirée Rock'n Swing Club.

Mutatis Mutandis

Some charming drawings by artist Trina Leigh make a reappearance with a new story line and a crucial difference:

La Quadrilla - Then and Now

Some photos from the long time Czech dance troupe, La Quadrilla, from 1996 and from the present.

Then:

And now:

I have to confess that I would like the older costumes better, but for the fact that stockings have been added to the current ones.

La Rigolbochomanie

An early expression of the cancan.  The dancers are trying to imitate Rigolboche, one of the early stars of the cancan, whose dancing during the Second Empire inspired a "Rigolbochmania" in Paris at the time. The artist is Charles Vernier.  The original print is offered at the French Proantic site:

http://www.proantic.com/display.php?mode=obj&id=68335

Rigolboche features prominently in David Price's book, "Cancan!", which is an essential and entertaining read for any fan of the cancan:

Until the Fat Lady Dances

A humorous image of a well-padded but flexible lady doing our favorite dance and doing it quite well by all appearances.  Extra points for the polka-dotted panties and stockings.

The artwork is by Isabelle Desrochers, and you can buy a print at:
