Your chance to hear David Price speak

Our fellow member and the leading expert of the history of the cancan, David Price. will be giving a lecture on the "Naughty French Cancan" on May 8 in Towcester at the Towcester and District Local History Society. The local About My Area webzine has a feature piece about it, complete with a photo of a local "historian" at:

http://www.aboutmyarea.co.uk/Northamptonshire/Towcester/NN12/News/Whats-On/246770-Towcester-History-Society-Naughty-French-Cancan

David's book "Cancan!" is the definitive work on the subject and is a great and entertaining read as well as a valuable reference book. See more about it and how to acquire a copy at:

Phoenix Entertainment

These charming dancers are from Phoenix Entertainment, Australian entertainment creators, producers and consultants.  See their site at:

http://phoenixentertainment.com.au/?

The photo was found on this page:

http://phoenixentertainment.com.au/?p=610

Even more interesting are these two videos that show the Phoenix dancers in performance in their very nice classically inspired costumes:

http://vimeo.com/64537975

http://vimeo.com/59957023

I found some other links to these dancers through a different booking agency and in different costumes.  I think it is the same dance group.

C'est la Vie Parisienne (It's a Paris Life)

A new discovery of a cancan film, "C'est la Vie Parisienne" (released in the US as "It's the Paris Life").  This 1954 film stars Claudine Dupuis who is featured in a couple of the photos above.  The still shots show a lot of promise for a nice classic cancan performance.

I've never seen it, and it isn't available through Amazon or on EBay or You Tube.  I don't know if it can be had elsewhere or not.  If anyone knows more about it or has seen it, please comment.

The IMDB page is:

Spirit of Paris

Another really nice photo of a dancer from the Spirit of Paris revue that is playing at the Palace in Paris.

This photo is from the Who When Where Photo blog of Olivier Corsan at the online news magazine, Le Parisien:

Motif Dance Productions

Motif Dance Productions is based in Australia and can provide performers in a number of dance styles, including the cancan as depicted above.  Purists can quibble about the costumes, but the dancers are certainly very attractive.

See more at:

http://www.motifdance.com.au/#!shows/clhv

There are also some non-cancan videos on the site that show the dancers in action.

Worldwide Appeal

The cancan has a following the world over, including in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where these dancers are based.  The Troupe is KL Dance Performance, and they can be booked through RhythmUP:

“Silence, ça Tourne”

There are some outstanding photos, including those above, at the Yes I Cannes site advertising a new show in Nice by Studios Reviera called, “Silence, ça Tourne”.  The  costumes appear to be based on those from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film.  Variety adds interest, don't you think?

The Yes I Cannes site, where you can read more about the production,  is at:

Light up my Life

More often than not fancy lighting spoils a cancan performance - think strobe lights, colored lights or dim "mood" lights, but I'll have to say that the lighting here really enhances this photo.

The photo is from the site of Jenn Campbell, "Diary of a Social Gal":

A Moveable Feast 2

I liked the previously posted/linked photos from The Washington Ballet's performance at the Hemingway in Paris Ball so much that I went looking for more.  These are from the cover of "Washington Life Magazine" and from the site of Revamp.com.  The Revamp photos were taken by Daniel Swartz.  The name of the photographer for Washington Life does not appear in the online material.

A Moveable Feast

This exciting cancan was performed by The Washington Ballet at, of all places, the Library of Congress, for an event called "Moveable Feast - Hemingway in Paris Ball".  This was to celebrate the opening of Septime Webre’s "Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises".

See the full report by Robert Devaney and more photos, which I think were taken by him, at The Georgetowner's site:

No posting today

In light of the events in Boston, it would be inappropriate to post something frivolous.  My deepest sympathy to the victims and their families.

and the photogallery at:

Sadly, these are the only two cancan photos, but they are very nicely done, particularly the first one.  I do not have the photographer's or dancers' names.

Folies Bergere?

That's what the meager description at the Del Campe auction in which this slide was offered says:

http://www.delcampe.net/page/item/id,163896606,var,OLD-35mm-DIAPOSITIVE-SLIDE-PHOTO-ARTIST-THEATRE-EROTIC-FRENCH-CANCAN-FOLIES-BERGERE-PARIS-FRANCE,language,E.html

The description also says the 1950s, but this has more of a Sixties look.  Sorry about the Watermark.
