Pictures Are Up!

At last!  I have finally put up all the pictures I took during my Bastille Day weekend.

I've created a new album entitled "Santa Barbara French Festival 2012".  In it are the 31 pictures I was lucky enough to capture of the West Coast Ballet performance of the can-can.  Check them out and refer back to them when I post my critique of the performance very shortly.

I will also include highlights of my artistic and philosophical chat with ballet mistress Ellen Schipper.  Turns out, she's got some amazing ideas & opinions regarding our favorite dance!

Enjoy!

More from DeviantArt (re Links 7-23-12)

As a follow-up to the DeviantArt posting of a few days ago (Links 7-23-12), I came across the following remarkable drawings on DeviantArt though a Google picture search.

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/206/e/1/james_dancing_the_cancan_by_trinaleigh-d58mxsp.jpg

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/207/6/e/james_at_war__lights_out__by_trinaleigh-d58rdnw.jpg

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/200/3/f/bottoms_up__by_trinaleigh-d57stcc.jpg

As you can see they are very nice indeed and better than most of the prior DeviantArt postings. But things aren't always exactly as they seem. There is a back story to this, which, if you are curious, you can see at the artist's site - TrinaLeigh at Deviant Art.

And, looking for more, I also found the following two Cinderella and Alice cancan drawings in the same vein, done by another artist, EricaLakehurst, whose work is also presented on DeviantArt:

http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/181/2/b/cinderella_does_the_can_can__by_ericalakehurst-d55ije3.jpg

http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/173/a/0/alice_dances_the_can_can_by_ericalakehurst-d54i3wq.jpg

I say just enjoy the drawings.

Almost Forgot

BTW,

I meant to say that I was fortunate enough to interview the ballet mistress of the West Coast Ballet: the ladies who put on the can-can performance @ Santa Barbara.

She is Miss Ellen Schipper, and the 2 of us had quite the artistic and intellectual discussion about a magic that is the can-can.  I will post my review of the dance first, with my critiques, and then the notes from my conversation with Miss Schipper.

Be back really soon, it'll be worth the wait.

At Last, They're Here!

Ladies & Gentlemen,
My personal business is finally concluded, and I can now proceed with posting my pictures of the 2012 Santa Barbara French Festival to the Club.  I will be sure to post them in a separate album all together, and also see if I can post them in my future updates.

Here is the opening shot of my album. Before long, I will have 30 more up for the club.  Trust me, it's worth the wait
Enjoy the 1st!

Santa Barbara French Festival 2012

Front page of the local news. Had to buy it to preserve it for posterity.

Pictures taken at the annual event in Santa Barbara, CA. These are the first, I believe to be posted in the club, & I know they won't be the last if I have anything to say about it!

A Slight Delay

My friends,

I regret to say that I have been unavoidably detained for a little while. I will be in San Jose on business, but I will be back on Monday. Rest assured that my report on the Santa Barbara French Festival will be worth the wait, in the meantime, here's a little something to whet your appetites.

Bastille Day Follow Up

The Karen Peled dancers did perform again in NYC, and there is a video:

The dancing was fine, but it's about time to retire the costumes, don't
you think?

Some other performances have shown up on You Tube, most notably the
following one from Los Angeles:

Check the Flickr photos linked there too.

their gig in Milwaukee, and Tony the Tiger may have some things to share
from Santa Barbara.

Bastille Day - Los Angeles

A new contender for favorite Bastille Day performance. I don't know the name of the dance troupe, but two of the dancers are named Marlene and Lili. How do I know that? See:

Ladies & Gentlemen, I have good news!

From July 14-15 the Santa Barbara, California French Festival will be happening and I am writing as we speak from a hotel room on the southern edge of town. Of course, the can-can is always the hottest number, and on this occasion, I will be there all day tomorrow with my camera in hand & a few tricks up my sleeve that will endear me into the hearts of the ladies and their ballet mistress.

Here is the link for anyone who wants to look into it: http://www.frenchfestival.com/

I have waited a long time to see a good can-can with my own eyes, and now my time has come! Besides pictures, I should have an interview with ballet mistress added to the future as well. If I may be granted permission, I would like to say to the teacher that I represent a small, but devoted group of people who consider themselves can-can connoisseurs. I would be quite interested in learning the details of how such a beautiful performance is put together so well year after year.

As I've stated before, I have my own criteria for evaluating a can-can performance. There are, I believe, 5 components that I grade on a scale from 1 to 10.

1. Attention to Detail: How well are the costumes & accessories put together? I always notice details.

2. Authenticity of Costumes: How well are the ladies dressed? Are they well put-together and vintage-inspired?

3. Choreography: How much thought goes into the dance? Is it like the old days? Are there extra flourishes?

4. Length of the Music: How long does the performance last? What soundtrack?

5. Performance Enthusiasm: Are the ladies really into their craft?

I am looking forward to the festival, and will provide as much detail as possible in the very near future. Stay tuned, I have a feeling you will not be disappointed.

Salud!

Gala de l'école de danse d'Hazebrouck

A dance shool performance of a cancan inspired by the 2001 Moulin Rouge film. I thought it was a pretty nicely filmed version of this genre.
